Anthirrhinum Madame Butterfly Ivory
Anthirrhinum Madame Butterfly Ivory
This absolutely gorgeous snapdragon is the Madame Butterfly series which are considered an all year around snapdragon. A unique range of tall, double-azalea flower snapdragons that create extra full and graceful flower spikes. They are excellent as cutflowers and can be sown in Autumn or in Spring. They are a cut and come again and technically a perennial (I am currently overwintering some in the polytunnel and they seem happy enough in the coldest one). Bred for field and polytunnel blooms.
Germination Instructions: Sow in trays indoors and surface sow onto moist but well-drained seed compost. Do not cover the seed as it is so tiny and it needs light to germniate! Sometimes I cover lightly with some vermiculite. Propagate 18-20°C until germination occurs 7-21 days later. When large enough to handle transplant seedlings to 8cm pots. Grow on in cooler conditions for 10-15 days. Plant out after danger of frost has passed with 50cm spacing. Seeds sown in autumn can be overwintered under glass in a greenhouse or polytunnel for planting out the following spring.
Growing Instructions : Will require pinching to encourage bushier plants. This plant prefers cool weather. Taller varieties may need staking.
Cultivation Instructions: Deadhead to prolong flowering window. Can handle a light frost. If the plant survives winter cut back to encourage new growth. I have had plants survive winter here and am experimenting again this year out of curiousity!
When to Sow: Feb to early May, August to November
Seed Content Approx 40 seeds, note seeds are teeny tiny (and super expensive!)
