Coix Lacryma-Jobi - Jobs Tears Seeds
The most incredible plant, it is edible, medicinal, the beads (jobs tears) can be used to make rosary beads or necklaces and it is incredible in a floral arrangement. I’ve grown it in the polytunnel and its magical to watch the beads form! It reminds me of corn as it starts growing but turns into grass.
Germination Instructions: Sow indoors 6-8 weeks prior to last expected frost. Prior to sowing soak seeds overnight in warm water or they may benefit from scarification. Sow 12mm deep into moist well-drained seed compost. I have found them to be like corn in appearance as they start growing, so I’d suggest a seed or bead in an individual pot. Ideal temp. 15-21°C. Germination takes 2-4 weeks approx. Transplant seedlings outside when danger of frost has passed with a 45cm spacing. Alternatively you can grow in a polytunnel.
Growing Instructions : Prefers any ordinary garden soil in full or partial sun. Water during dry spells.
Cultivation Instructions
Will produce seeds which are edible or can be dried for ornamental use. Often used for making Rosary Beads. Harvest seeds when black, they will acquire their shiny grey colour in storage.
Seed count: 20 seeds
