Autumnal Table Decorations

Autumnal colours in nature can not be ignored. They are absolutely magnificent. Every day now I see a difference in the hedgerows and the beauty of nature as the leaves change colours and then fall to the ground. Last week I was driving on a particularly windy day and at one point my car roof was bombarded by beech nuts, I’m presuming it was the wind and not a tree full of angry squirrels taking aim! I love to decorate in the house using nature and the hedgerows to guide and inspire me. I found some images of different tablescapes that I thought were beautiful or ones we could take inspiration from, credit to Shuttershock for them.

A wine and green outdoor setting. There are plenty of flowers in this colour that can be grown in Ireland at this time of year. I would use dahlias, penstemon, chocolate cosmos, chocolate mint and white cosmos to name a few to create this look.

Love the styling of this image, the rich wool textiles, the baskets and suitcase, so many textures! A basket of fresh apples and jug of helenium or rudbeckia for florals.

A simply decorated table, in that it doesn’t need lots of different elements to create it. A pretty mix of small colourful decorative pumpkins gathered in the middle and silver cutlery laid out perfectly.

All the beautiful coloured leaves of Autumn. You could easily gather and dry leaves in different colours and use them to decorate your table or house. My children used to love making art from dried leaves. It was an adventure in itself gathering up leaves, chestnuts and other bits firstly. There’s a chestnut tree a few fields away that is untouched all year round. Its protected by a boundary of weeds and brambles so when we’d battle our way in we’d be greeted by a carpet of leaves, chestnuts and the most incredibly soft composted soil to stand on!

All the colours!

Very much a pumpkin inspired tablescape here, and a pail of dried or fresh grasses in the middle.

Apples, pumpkins and leaves for a nature inspired door front.

Recently I was invited to talk in Bunclody Library in Wexford and as part of the talk I created a couple of table centrepieces using hedgerow goodies and some flowers. I was able to make two different colourways letting nature guide me. For many years I had no flowers growing here so all I had was the hedgerows to forage from so I’d happily fill a vase with branches and weeds. Sometimes the weeds gone to seed can be the nicest of all!

I hope you make some beautiful Autumnal tables!

Happy creating and foraging,

Maria
